ADSUM FIRSTS
First artwork of the NewSpace era created for the Moon to actually land on the Moon. Adsum was created and produced in 2019. It landed on the Moon, in the Mare Crisium region, on March 2, 2025, at 2:34 am CST.
First poetic work on the Moon. Neither figurative nor abstract, Adsum is composed entirely of symbols that express our temporal relationship to the universe.
First artwork on the Moon made of a material naturally occurring on the lunar surface: glass. This opens the path towards a sustainable lunar art practice.
First artwork of the NewSpace era to soft-land on the Moon. Blue Ghost Mission 1 was the first fully successful American lunar mission since Apollo.
First artwork to land on the Moon after the World Monuments Fund (WMF) included the Earth’s satellite in the 2025 World Monuments Watch list. The declaration, made on January 15, 2025, supports the WMF's goal to “recognize and preserve the artifacts that testify to humanity’s first steps beyond Earth—a defining moment in our shared history.”
First artwork authorized to be delivered to the lunar surface inside a lander. Adsum’s internal location contributes to its preservation for future generations due to the protection provided by metal barriers and the spacecraft’s Gold Multi-Layer Insulation film (MLI).
First artwork confirmed on the Moon to enter an institutional collection on Earth. Adsum received the ARCO/Beep Award at ARCO in 2025 and is now part of the permanent collection of the New Art Foundation, Spain.
First artwork with two copies on the Moon. Adsum’s backup copy will fly aboard Astrobotic’s Griffin to the Nobile region near the lunar south pole.
First artwork created by Eduardo Kac specifically for the Moon. While Eduardo Kac has previously created space artworks, Adsum is his first work intended for permanent placement on the Moon, making it a trailblazer in lunar art history.
