Alba Guestbook (2002)

I hope that in 2003 Alba is finally freed and finds her way to the Kac's family household. Peace.

Out my way, we take rabbits seriously as they are extremely damaging to our food crops and flower gardens (read FARM ART). Perhaps my family could borrow Alba for a little inter-breeding program. I like the idea of a glow-in-the-dark target. Keep up the good work!

A bunny, how cute. Do you think the response from the public would be the same if you used an albino toad? I have concerns, but i have empathy - take it home but do not breed it.

Why, I wonder turn a perfectly funktioning rabbit into a bizarre nightlight? Just because one can?? I dont see this as a strong enough reason, not by far! Why not stop manipulating perfectly functioning small furry animals for the gain of fame, or whatever reason this has happend for. This is just absolutely strange and unusual and I for one can't seem to find a single positive outcome of this. Stop this mad scientist nonsence right away. Leave our animals alone if you are not going to help them in any way!! Thanks.........M.I.A

Hi,

I am currently a student at the Universtiy of Alberta and i have become very interested upon hearing about this very unique rabbit. I have heard that the GFP bunny is a photosynthetic rabbit. Is this true because I did not think something like that would be possible! If this is true, what would be the appropriate term to describe its mode of nutrition? I ask because i'm sure it's different from other rabbits.

My email address is <mailto:hoda_sca@hotmail.com>hoda_sca@hotmail.com and i would love to hear more about this bunny.

Thank You,

Hoda Samia <hoda_sca@hotmail.com>

I am in a university biology class and one of the questions our professor asked us is the following: If genetic engineers managed to produce a photosynthetic rabbit, it might look something like Alba
below. If such an organism were created, what does your group think would be the appropriate term to describe its mode of nutrition? In fact, Alba does exist. She was created on instructions from Eduardo Kac of the Art Institute of Chicago. Alba is only green under fluorescent light as she was engineered to express the jellyfish green fluorescent protein. She is part of Kac's esplorations into transgenic art.

I am very interested in this creation of yours. I was wondering if you could answer the question given above and give me more detail about it. Thank you very much.

Americanksi -- I bring news! The French are, believe it or not, as intelligent and responsible as you! And this means, amazingly, that they are equally capable, if not more so, of providing Alba with a decent place to nibble carrots! I know that it is difficult for you American homeboys -- and girls -- to appreciate the fact that the Excited States are not the only example of a first-world country with modern technology (or at least technology capable of sustaining a rabbit, albeit a green one)and responsible citizens. I would invite you to dwell for a bit on who has started this whole media circus and attention-grabbing frenzy -- the French, or Mr. E. Kac? Following on from that, which of the two parties do YOU think will be most likely, should he get his grubby hands on her, to use Alba for much media exploitation?I rest my case. Quod erat demonstratum. Latin for "I'm cool, you suck." Ciao

The man wants to provide this bunny with a comfortable, safe, loving home environment. If we don't see a problem with people keeping completely common bunnies as pets, then we should just be thrilled that he wants to make it a pet and give it a loving home instead of dissecting its little fuzzy bunny parts.

Allah has commanded me to tell you that the glowing rabbit is a sign, a SIGN!!! It represents the evil capitalist running dog Americans demanding constant capitulation from the weak-willie Europeans, who have finally discovered their pig-dog spines and told Yankee-doodle Kac where to stick his infidel hotdog. There will come a day when green rabbits will rule the world with fire and ice, and devil-spawn satans like Kac will burn forever in big tubs of margarine in hell. Long live the shirt-head ae-rab revolution!!!A very very mad mad man, to a very very stupid American con artist.

Congratulations, I've been telling my colleagues that genetic engineeringis an art form for years. Glad to see that someone has done it. Now, trysome other fluorescent colored protein genes, breed her and them and establishnew varieties. It's a shame that bioluminescent proteins won't work yetas their co-factors (substrates) are not biosynthable yet or are toxic.Perhaps in the future we will be able to make bioluminescent animals, plants, etc. --John

You have made a mockery of years of scientific research. GFP bunnyrepresents a giant step backwards in public understanding of genetic engineering.Do you really think the difference between ethical and unethical laboratorybehavior is whether or not you are willing to love the animal afterwards? The debate centers around proper or improper use of genetic techniques. You can call your work whatever you want but you can't get around the factthat it is irresponsible.

Mesdames and Messieurs, it is my extreme regret to inform you all thatla petite lapine verte whom you all call Alba died peacefully last nightin her sleep after being dropped accidentally off the third floor of ourlab onto our car park. I know that M. Kac has for some time been claimingAlba as his own, and I know now that Alba would not have wanted us to fightover her, but rather to attempt le reconciliation avec M. Kac. Therefore,I have ordered that le green skin of ma petite choufleur Alba be sent toM. Kac immediatement, that he might have some keepsake and aide-memoirof her life and activites. I hope he will not mind trop the blood stainson the skin, or the little itty bitty stain of brain material on the backof the rabbit skin. I hope that Alba's death was not in vain, and thatensemble we can unite the world in peace under the banner of the lovinggreen rabbit, even if it means that on doit tuer those stupid Israelisand Palestinians. Seems like its been a while, did Alba breed? Amidst all the hoopla, remember this... I (me, the writer) am a product of my surroundings. Iam constantly being Re, and Pre, Programmed by others. Why don't the animalactivists see that the working class are treated worse than the familypet most of the time?? As long as Alba is happy, and enjoys Apples andCabbage, I'm sure she could care less if she glows. I'd be interested toknow if ... 1. did the Male rabbits notice her difference? 2. could sheprocreate? 3. do her offspring glow? friend of the Lapin Garrett C.

hi, it's me again.i was really puzzled after i heard why the lab won«tlet eduardo kac keep alba. i thought it was for some kind of enviormentalissue, but i found out alba is harmless to her enviorment. the lab givesreally nonsense answers, things like "he won«t be able to presentalba to the outer world" (?????). well, i guess we are just living in atime where tradional values just don«t fit anymore. unfortunately, few people think of new ways to deal and interact with the world. maybebecause they are scared to find out new things... if people are alwaysscared, (even though at a first glance they show the opposite) then we«llnever get anywhere. i think the world needs people like eduardo, who isstruggling and researching and trying to find out how to live with thesenew technologies the best way possible. TELL THE LAB THE EXPERIMENT ISNOT OVER YET IF ALBA IS NOT HOME. they are only half way there.

Delving into the future is irresistible. Creating chaos is au courant.Neither is necessarily "art" - Creating works that have a life of theirown requires thought to the consequences. This type of thought seems tobe missing here.

Rabbits need a great deal of stimulation, affection and attention...anda good home. Not sure how I feel about her birth, but I do appreciate thesense of responsibility that you feel for her. What purpose can it serveto keep her in a lab? She'd be safer and happier in a good home!

Attached is an image of Edwardo Kac, holding Alba. Edwardo is a cute, little genetic scientist. Heís got fluffy hair, loves munching oncarrots and drink beverages made from hops like many other member of hisspecies. But when illuminated with blue light (maximum excitation at 488nm) Edwardo takes on an otherworldly appearance, his whole body -- skin, even facial hair -- emits a fluorescent-green glow: http://www.petboxes.com/eKac.jpg

I JUST WANNA ADD THAT THIS IDEA ISN'T EVEN NEW: HOW CAN YOU CALL COPYINGTHE IDEA OTHER PEOPLE YOUR(!) ARTWORK??? THERE WERE GLOWING RATS CREATEDBEFORE 1997! CHECK THIS PAGE: http://www.parascope.com/articles/slips/fs_174.htmAND BY THE WAY: YOU DO NOT DESERVE THIS BONNY, HOW COULD SOMEONE WHO CREATEDA TRANSGENIC ANIMAL "FOR FUN" POSSIBLY LOVE IT?!? NO WAY!!! THIS BONNYMIGHT VERY WELL BE SUFFERING FROM SIDEEFFECTS FROM EGFP. AS THIS, FOR SELFISHREASONS CREATED, BONNY IS OF SCIENTIFIC INTERST, THERE CAN AT LEAST BEDONE SOME RESEARCH WHICH MIGHT BE USEFUL FOR A LARGER GROUP OF PEOPLE THANJUST IT'S CREATOR! IF SO THERE WOULD BE SOME SENSE IN THE EXISTING OF THISBONNY. (THOUGH I DO NOT SUPPORT THE WAY LAB ANIMALS ARE KEPT AND THE BESTWOULD STILL BE IF IT NEVER EXISTED!!!) IF THE BONNY IS RELEASED FROM THELAB, IT SHOULD NEVER BE RETURNED TO "IT'S FAMILY". BUT WHATERVER MAY (HAVE)HAPPEN(ED); IT REMAINS A CRIME TO CREATE TRANSGENIC ANIMALS AS AM "ARTWORK"!!!

ARE YOU MAD?!? THIS IS FUCKING CRAZY!!! WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU WANTTO CREATE AN GLOWING BUNNY? JUST FOR FUN? WHAT IF THIS POOR BUNNY IS SUFFERINGFROM SIDEEFFECTS FROM EGFP? I GUESS YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT THAT!?! IF ITWAS FAVORABLE FOR A BUNNY TO GLOW NATURE WOULD ALREADY HAVE CREATED GLOWINGBUNNYS IN TERMS OF EVOLUTION, SO IT SIMPLY JUST CAN'T BE GOOD FOR A BUNNYTO GLOW!! WOULD YOU LIKE TO GLOW? WHY DIDN'T YOU DO THIS WITH SOMEONE OFYOUR FAMILIY? GUESS CAUSE YOU DIDN'T WANT TO HAVE ALL PEOPLE STARING ATTHAT PERSON. ABSOLUTELY RIGHT! (I SEE THERE IS AT LEAST A SPARK OF HUMANITY...)BUT A BUNNY IS A LIVING CREATURE TOO! DID YOU LIKE JUST FORGET THAT?!?YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO GENETICALLY MANIPULATE A LIVING CREATURE FOR AN ARTWORK!!!THE ONLY REASON WHICH MANIPULATING THE GENOMIC INFORMATION OF AN LIVINGCREATURE SHOULD BE ALLOWED FOR IS MEDICAL RESEARCH. I DON'T BELIEBE YOUDID THIS TO SUPPORT THE DEBATE ON TRANSGENIC ARTWORK, BUT TO GET THE ATTENTIONOF THE PUBLIC FOR YOUR ERRR... "AMAZING" PROJECT (CRUEL WOULD MATCH BETTERTHOUGH). TO DEBATE ON THE PHILOSOPHY OF TRANSGENIC ARTWORK (WHICH SHOULDN'TNECESSARY ANYWAYS CAUSE IT'S TOTALY CRAZY AND SHOULD BE STRICTELY PROHIBITED!!!)WE WOULDN'T NEED AN ACTUAL MUTANT! I HOPE YOU'LL THINK OF THIS THE FUTUR.FINALLY I WANNA SAY THAT I'M REALLY SORRY FOR THAT BUNNY AND THAT WE HADTO SEE SOMETHING LIKE THAT! I JUST HOPE WE'LL NEVER HAVE TO SEE SOMETHINGSIMILAR AGAIN.

Wow! a piece of art that even makes nerdy scientists think. Your artworkis revolutionary. some people say that the concept, and the bunny is notyour property. well when did the scientists present their work (results)as a piece of art? did they realise the cultural value of what they doand did they know how to get such an incredible response from such a broadrange of people across the globe. THIS IS THE FUTURE I WOULD LIKE TO SEE.communication and integration of presently disparate fields!

Hi, I like what i see at ekac.org.

I stumbled across your website and found it fascinating. Im a Geologistworking towards a PhD at Ednburgh Uni. Currently feeling science is indanger at the moment. It needs to evolve fast. Its been a strong catalystto globalisation and people have harvested its fruits for as much (or more)bad than good. now it needs to grow to encompass its responsibilities.we cant go on thinking science is blind. we (scientists and those who useits findings) need to aknowledge our responsibilities socially, politically, economically and environmentally, also culturally. Scientists often seemto have a limited appreciation of art. and artists of science. Ive alwayswanted to bring the two closer. so naturally find the site fascinating.I often think about applying a scientific approach to art, as an experiment.or about the artistic qualities of scientific endeavours, instruments andlanguage. Im going to look at more of your stuff tomorrow.

Nice one!

Sam Rice.

I sincerely hope that Alba is returned to live the remainder of hislife with the family of Eduardo Kac. I have very strong feelings aboutanimals kept strictly for research, but that is beside the point here.Alba should NOT be held hostage to French bureaucracy, either at the laboratoryor government level. He needs to live in comfort, not in a stainless steelcage. His work is DONE. Let him GO!

There's a good reason we instinctually runfrom you. You either want to put us in a cage at your home, a cage in thelab, in front of a spray gun, under a needle, in a stew pot, or withinfiring range of your pellet gun. I think that Alba should be home. Rabbits have a need to be loved.I wish Houdebine, that said that "Alba is just a number" could understandthat the bond between a bunny and a family can be just as strong as anyother pet. Bunnys can live a long and happy life with a family (ours lived12 years) Life in a cage for Alba will reduce her quality of life and thelenghth of her life. Alba should be with a loving family, with the freedometo run and be loved. Not in a cage and not just a number. She has compleatedher part of the test, she turned green (so to speak) Let her enjoy therest of her life.

Amasing, how feeble minds, who believe in a god, do also know, thattheir god (of course the only one) would have created glowing rabbits,if he wanted that rabbits glow, and that gen manipulation is an abomination.Maybe God wants these fools to shut up, but on the otherhand he only existsin their feeble minds. Who ever is against human endeavour, progress, success, science and art, should live in the forests from "mother" nature, neverconsult a doctor, never use a car or even a bridge. Mankind once payeddearly, when it fell for Christianity. Christianity brought on the DarkAge upon us, and once again religious superstition threatens progress, science and the best interests of humanity. Christian antiscience is acurse! No more Christianity, no more Dark Age, but a healthy, shining future, freedom for art and science!!!

What Mr. Kac has done is genius. When I 1st saw this i was so totallyblown away by the thought and inventivness involved. I just wanted to saythat I Believe that Alba should be able to come home, the home that MrKac and his family are willing to open to Alba, and not kept away fromsomeone who wants to love Alba. Like he stated, Alba needs to have peoplearound and show love, as isn't that what all of us strive for? Animalsdo have the right to be loved, especially by a family that will welcomethem with open arms. Just wanted to say i support Mr. Kac's cause, andbelieve that Alba should be allowed to come home to Chicago!!! Good Luck!!!Jason Owen

I am a high school senior in Portland Oregon, USA. I have been assigneda senior thesis project and I chose bioluminescence for my topic. I amtrying to determine the negative and positive effects it has had on ourworld. I was wondering if you could possibly help to offer your own thoughts,or point me in the right direction for finding either side of the story. However, any debates about your own work would be the most helpful to me.Thank you so much for your time.

Que Viva Alba! In Chicago. Eduardo, my very best wishes on the recuperation and reunion with Albita. I really appreciate your brilliant inputs in contemporary art y and how the vision of human existence and presence (in any form) with other creatures is emerging within the universe. In fact thats the meaning of science and it should be of making responsible work of art that question our position in the universe with other creatures within the boundaries of sace and time. But why there's such hostility in the "art world" bubble? It should be the idea of an utopia where nothing else is petrified in the prisons of the visual culture? I think is the most genuine proposal of connecting us as part of each other, mutating into each other, transmigrating into each other. Thank you for questioning my own existence as art maker. Blessings!

I should mention that in my previous message where I typed "stick toyour own word" I meant to type "Stick to your own work". The latter iswhat I suggested might be commendable. Ciao.

Do you not find it rather cynical to imply that you are mainly responsiblefor Alba's creation? As a "professional" you will surely appreciate thatengineering of constitutive expression of an exogenous peptide such asgreen fluorescent protein in a mammalian organism is not exactly somethingthat one can do in one's back yard. Your statement that your creation ofthe bunny was achieved with the invaluable assistance of French scientists(I paraphrase) thus actually means that they are entirely responsible forthe bunny's creation. In other words, you have no claim over Alba. Yourclaim of "concept" is would also appear to be spurious. Furthermore, inthis world of publishing and patenting he who does either first owns therights. Creation of fluorescent multicellular organisms via insertion ofGFP goes back many years, and just last year pigs with fluorescent yellowsnouts and trotters were revealed to the general public, having been createdin, I believe, a laboratory in Southern England. To provide an analogy:if I were to approach Microsoft Corporation and suggest that they createdWindows XP version 2, would I then be able to claim it as my own invention?Stick to your own word, which I'm sure is commendable. Alba's already homeand hopefully she'll stay there. (Given that Alba means "Scotland", onemight suggest that we have a greater claim than you.... But I won't. Becausethat would be sad.)

why isolate a being instead of taking care of it and interacting? albais already part of society, we cannot deny that. the way our society ischanging so fast together with these new tecnology really interests me,though sometimes i am not so sure about cloning. but i don«t thinkit is a time to be for it or against it. it«s about trying to makeit the best way possible. it«s inevitable. wish you luck. and congratulationsfor your work; you«re one of my favorite artists

I think that Alba should be able to go home because it isn't fair for her to be locked up in some lab, she needs to be loved and cared for like any other animal just because she glows doesn't mean she shouldn't have a family to care for her and a good home! Mr. Kac if you read this I think you should keep fighting for Alba, I'm writing a school paper on her and I've began to love her and I haven't even seen her so I can only imagine how much you love her so DON'T give up and keep fighting for her!I wish you the best of luck love, Amy

I am a prospective student in the Iatech program at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and I learned about Eduardo Kac while researching for a paper on morality as concerned with performance art. When I first reached the website, I was unimpressed and really quite disgusted. The thought of using cloning in more mediums just makes me sick due to the prospective destruction it may cause on a larger scale in our future. But the way in which Kac talks about his bunny and the love he conveys in his writings and articles makes me rethink. The fact is that the bunny was created. There is no turning back, and to now keep Alba from his creator, his life-giver and most importantly his father, is like adding up two wrongs and expecting to somehow manipulate the equation into making a right. Free Alba. Let her enjoy the life that was given to her.
