Eduardo Kac, défricheur et visionnaire
Pioneer and visionary

No one medium can hold Eduardo Kac. His work ranges from body-based performance art and graffiti to the use of fax machines, slow-scan, digital poetry, telerobotics, the Web and biotechnology. In Kac's art what matters is not the storage medium but the concepts which, in his case, can only be expressed through the use of new technologies.

Ornitorrinco, Kac & Bennett. 1989

Born in 1962 in Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Kac spent the first part of his artistic career in Brazil before coming to Chicago in 1989. He now teaches at The School of the Art Institute. His work has been shown in many exhibitions around the world and is featured in the collections of such institutions as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Chicago's Holography Museum and the Modern Art Museum in Rio. Somehow he finds time to publish copiously as well; Leonardo and Visible Language are among the journals to have carried his texts.
Kac is a pioneer, to put it mildly. He more or less invented three of the media he likes to work in: holopoetry,(1) telepresence and biotelematics.(2)

At the beginning of the '80s, when poetry was (once again) pronounced dead, Kac took the pronouncement as a challenge. His explorations of experimental verse (one of his favorite poets is e. e. cummings) led him to the conclusion that the two-dimensional page was, indeed, exhausted, and he decided to write his words in the three dimensions of real space. Holography made it possible to create an immaterial and mobile architecture of words, and a new visual syntax. He coined the word holopoetry for this work in 1983.(3) Two years later, he put out animated poems on Brazil's minitel system.(4)

Dialogical Artworks

One of Kac's key concepts is hybridization, dialogical artworks. The body and its presence has also been a recurrent theme in his work since his first performances on the beaches of Rio. This approach would eventually lead to Orintorrinco, a series of telepresence works created in the U.S. with the collaboration of Ed Bennet (1988-98). Ornintorrinco is a robot remote-controlled by telephone (and also the Internet), a substitute body shared and "inhabited" by the participating public.

The search for artistic expressions of complex concepts is what Kac's work is all about. He incorporates different spaces (physical and virtual) into a single piece so as to render the relationship between the body and the mind in all its richness of connections and interpenetrations and produce a new ecology where organic and technological systems cross-pollinate. He had to invent a term, biotelematics, for his latest works, pieces like Teleporting AnUnknown State (1996), where a seed sprouts thanks to a light sent via the Internet by means of a webcam, and A-positive (1997), an "exchange of lives" between a human and a robot.

A New Aesthetics

Kac is a man of his times in the literal sense, not because he uses the latest technologies or because all his work is tinged with subtle political and social critique, but because he is inventing new art forms and bringing a new aesthetics into the world.

(2) A term invented by the artist.
(3) Holopoetry does not consist of holograms of traditional static versification; rather it is the creation of a dynamic poetry where beholders' readings (in both the literal and figurative sense) change as they move.
(4) France's minitel system, a phone-computer appliance to read information on a central server by means of software resident on that server, never went beyond teletext in that country. Brazil bought into this technology and developed its graphical dimension.
